St Matthew’s estate in Brixton was grey, dreary and crime ridden housing development constructed in the late 1960’s, originally comprising 7-storey ‘H’ blocks together with terraced housing.

Two Registered Social Landlords: London & Quadrant Housing Trust and Tower Homes were brought on board and partnered with Lambeth council to develop one of the new build blocks for shared ownership. Mulalley and Company, a key player in Estate and Area Regeneration programs, were unanimously chosen by the clients for the regeneration of this large inner city housing estate.

Zero Energy = Greener Living.

Part of the programme involved the construction of a new key worker housing development including 12 “zed” housing units (zero energy) which went on to win Low Energy Building of the Year Award in 2006.

The energy bills (around £100 per annum per household) are the result of adopting a super-insulated and airtight building with zero carbon space heating standards. All living rooms face due south and have large windows and direct access to attractive south-facing winter gardens and balconies.

To achieve zero energy in these new build properties the ingredients needed to be exact, so as well as super efficient heating systems, insulation needed to play an important part in the build and one of the key factors in this was obviously the windows.

Bereco have been manufacturing energy efficient windows since 2004 and were the ultimate choice for Mulalley in the construction of the 12 units. The products chosen were tilt and turn timber windows and timber sliding patio doors and were designed with top specification 24mm glazing systems to give optimal energy performance, without, the zero energy rating would not have been achieved.

Since supplying these windows in 2004 Bereco has been constantly looking at the thermal performance of their windows and enhancing them with up to date glazing methods to maintain their state of the art products and keeping ahead of the game, this makes Bereco an obvious choice for social housing developments where one of the main requirements is greener living.

Bereco’s Green Credentials.
