Founded in 1845 by William Aldwin Soames, Brighton College was the first Victorian public school to be founded in Sussex. Soames originally planned for use of the Brighton Pavilion, but after refusal by Queen Victoria, built the school in the suburb of Kemptown. Now a Preparatory School for children aged 8 to 13, this monumental white building is located a short walk from the sea front and only minutes away from the beauty of the South Downs National Park.
The College itself is one of Britain’s leading schools. Described as “Britain’s most forward thinking school” by The Week, it was named UK Independent School of the Year 2013-14 at the Independent Schools Awards, having previously been awarded the coveted title of England’s Independent School of the Year 2011-12 by The Sunday Times. Every year, more and more of Brighton’s pupils secure places at the UK’s most esteemed universities, particularly Oxford and Cambridge. The College’s former pupils number amongst Britain’s foremost business, professional and political leaders; and numerous sporting, creative and artistic talents.
The building, although in a good state of repair in general was in need of bringing back to its former glory, a project that Parker Joinery are extremely familiar with and as such, they were chosen by TK Installations to provide the building materials and windows for both phases of this prestigious renovation. Having worked with Bereco on a number of similarly complex and prestigious projects Parker Joinery knew that Bereco Traditional Range Sliding Sash Windows would be the perfect partner to restore this elegant building whilst remain in keeping with original details.
In order to perfectly tie in with the existing windows, a cords and weights sliding sash window was chosen. Cords and Weights windows are designed with a box section which houses the weights as the sash windows of old. This box sash then sits perfectly behind the external brick reveal to partially conceal the timber section from the outside.
As each window opening featured an arched stonework detail at the top, the windows were designed with an elegant curved plate detail which perfectly marries with the arch of the stone. Although aesthetically pleasing from the outside, the arched stonework could be seen through the inside of the original windows. The new windows were drawn up to design out this detail to make for a much cleaner finish from the inside.
Being painted in a RAL 9010 Pure White, each window blends eloquently with the façade of the building adding to the grandeur. A hardwood timber was selected for this particular project which is sustainably sourced from FSC® 100% certified timber, which is something that is particularly unique in the marketplace when it comes to Hardwood.
